Independent printer help. Not affiliated with any printer manufacturer.

These independent tips are for people who still use a Dell-branded printer. This site has no connection to Dell. Dell no longer sells printers under its own name, but many of its printers are still in use, and drivers and manuals for many models remain available on Dell's official support site, which this page links to.

Common problems with Dell printers

Finding drivers with the service tag

Dell printers have a service tag or similar identifier on a label, often on the back or inside a cover. Enter it, or your printer's model name, on Dell's official support site to see the drivers and manuals listed for your printer. Download from Dell's site rather than third-party driver sites, which can bundle unwanted software.

Older printers on Windows 11

Many Dell printers were designed for earlier Windows versions. If Dell's site doesn't list a driver for Windows 11, try the driver Windows offers when you add the printer, or a newer driver for your model's Windows 10 version if one is listed. Basic printing often works even when extra utilities don't.

Toner and drum supplies

Supplies for many Dell laser printers are still sold, but availability varies by model and region and can be limited for older printers. Match the part number on the old cartridge or drum, or in the manual, exactly. A toner-low message right after a change usually means the cartridge isn't fully seated or doesn't match the model.

Scanning from older all-in-ones

Dell's scanning software for older multifunction models may not run on current Windows or macOS versions. Try the scanning built into your system instead, such as the Windows Scan app or Image Capture on a Mac, which work with many USB and network scanners.

Network printer showing offline

If a Dell network printer shows offline after a router change or restart, its IP address has probably changed. Print a configuration page from the control panel to see the current address, then update the printer port or remove and re-add the printer on your computer.

Paper jams and fuser heat

Most Dell printers still in use are lasers. When clearing a jam, turn the printer off and let it cool for several minutes first, because the fuser near the output area gets very hot. Pull paper out slowly in the direction it travels and check that no torn pieces remain.

Tips for Dell owners

  • Keep a note of your printer's service tag or model name; it is the quickest way to find the right downloads on Dell's support site.
  • Type a network printer's IP address into a browser to open its built-in web page for supply levels and network settings.
  • If drivers or supplies for your printer are no longer available, it may be time to replace it. Before you recycle it, use the reset option in the manual to clear stored data such as saved email addresses or fax numbers.
  • Many local recycling schemes accept used toner cartridges and old printers; check the options in your area rather than putting them in household waste.
