Quick fix

Take the cartridge out, check that all protective tape and plastic caps are removed, and push it back firmly into the correct slot until it clicks. If the error stays, do a power reset: with the printer on, unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in. Make sure the cartridge number matches the one listed for your printer.

You might see

  • A message such as cartridge problem, incompatible cartridge or cartridge missing
  • The printer won't print after you install a new cartridge
  • One cartridge's level shows as unknown or a question mark
  • The error started after a firmware update

Usually caused by

  • Protective tape or a cap still on the cartridge
  • Cartridge not fully seated or in the wrong slot
  • Dirty or damaged electrical contacts
  • Wrong cartridge number, or one sold for a different region
  • A third-party or refilled cartridge chip the printer doesn't accept
  • A firmware update that changed how cartridges are checked

Safety first. Inkjet cartridges are changed with the printer switched on, so wait for the carriage to stop and touch only the cartridge; unplug the printer before cleaning contacts inside, and on laser printers keep clear of the hot fuser and the drum.

Step-by-step fix

Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

0 of 6 steps tried

  1. Remove all packaging

Take the cartridge out and check for orange tape, clear film or a plastic cap; laser toner often has a pull-tab seal. Leave the copper contacts and any chip in place.

  2. Reseat it in the correct slot

Match the cartridge to the slot's label or color, insert it at the angle your manual shows, and push until it clicks. Close the door or latch fully, as many printers only read cartridges once it's shut.

  3. Clean the contacts

Wipe the cartridge's gold or copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth or a cotton swab barely dampened with water, and let them dry fully. Clean the matching contacts in the carriage only with the printer unplugged, and don't touch the nozzles.

  4. Do a power reset

With the printer on, unplug the power cord for 60 seconds, then plug it straight into a wall outlet and power on. This makes the printer re-read every cartridge.

  5. Check the number and region

Compare the number on the cartridge with the list in your manual or on the maker's site. Some printers only accept cartridges sold for the region where the printer was bought, so a genuine cartridge from abroad can be rejected.

  6. Third-party and refilled cartridges

Compatible and refilled cartridges work in many printers, but some printers reject chips they don't recognize, and firmware updates can change which ones are accepted. If only a non-original cartridge fails, check the seller's compatibility notes or try another batch, brand or an original to find the cause.

Common questions

Can a firmware update stop compatible cartridges working?

On some printers, yes, because updates can change how cartridge chips are checked. Others keep working, and compatible suppliers often release updated chips.

Why is my printer rejecting a genuine cartridge?

Usually it's a poorly seated cartridge, dirty contacts, the wrong model number, or a cartridge sold for another region.
