Scanner not working or not detected
Computer can't find your scanner, or scanning won't start? Check the connection, install the full software, restart the scan service and test again.
Quick fix
Restart the printer and your computer, and make sure both are on the same network or the USB cable goes straight into the computer. Then install the full software package for your model from the maker's official support site, because a basic print driver often doesn't include scanning. Test with the Windows Scan app or macOS Image Capture.
Didn’t work? Go to the full stepsYou might see
- Printing works but scanning doesn't
- Your scanning app says no scanner was found or it can't connect
- The scanner is listed but scanning fails or freezes
- Scanning stopped after an update or a Wi-Fi change
Usually caused by
- Only a basic print driver installed, with no scan driver
- Computer and printer on different networks
- Windows Image Acquisition service stopped
- Firewall or security software blocking scanner discovery
- A loose USB cable or an unpowered hub
- The scanner stuck after an earlier error
Step-by-step fix
Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.
Any all-in-one printer or scanner
0 of 3 steps tried
-
Restart everything
Turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds and turn it on, and restart your computer too. Clear any message on the printer's screen and make sure the scanner lid is closed.
-
Check the connection
For USB, plug the cable straight into the computer rather than a hub or monitor port, and try another port or cable. For Wi-Fi, print the printer's network status page from its menu and confirm it's on the same network as your computer, not a guest network.
-
Test scanning at the printer
If your printer can copy, or scan to a USB drive or email, try that. If it works, the scanner hardware is fine and the problem is on the computer side.
Windows 11 / 10

-
Install the full software
Windows often sets up an all-in-one with a print-only driver. Download the full software or driver package for your exact model from the maker's official support site and install it; this adds the scan driver and usually a scanning app.
-
Test with Windows Scan
Install the free Windows Scan app from the Microsoft Store, open it and pick your scanner. If it appears and scans here, the driver works and the problem is with your other app.
-
Restart Windows Image Acquisition
Press Win + R, type
services.mscand press Enter. Right-click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and choose Restart, or Start if it isn't running. -
Set the network to private
For a network scanner, open Settings > Network & internet, open your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection's properties, and set the network profile type to private so devices can find each other. If you use third-party security software, check it isn't blocking the maker's scan software.
-
Remove and re-add the device
Remove the device in Printers & scanners, restart the PC, then add it again or rerun the maker's installer.
macOS
0 of 4 steps tried
-
Try Image Capture
Open Image Capture from the Applications folder. Your scanner should appear in the sidebar under Devices or Shared; if it scans here, scanning works and the issue is with another app.
-
Re-add it in Printers and Scanners
In System Settings > Printers & Scanners, Control-click your device and remove it, then add it again with Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax. This often restores scanning on devices that support driverless scanning.
-
Install the maker's software if needed
Older or business models may need the maker's Mac scan driver or app. Download it only from the maker's official support site and check it supports your macOS version.
-
Allow local network access
On macOS 15 and later, if the maker's app can't find the scanner, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network and make sure the app is switched on.
Did this fix it?
Good. To confirm everything is healthy, print a test page. It takes a minute and shows any quality problems early.

Common questions
Why does my printer print but not scan?
Printing and scanning use separate drivers. Windows and macOS often set up printing automatically, but scanning may need the maker's full software package.
Do I need the maker's app to scan?
Not always. Many modern all-in-ones work with the Windows Scan app or macOS Image Capture, but older or business models may need the maker's driver.
