Wi-Fi Direct printing isn't working
You can't connect to your printer's Wi-Fi Direct network or print over it. Find its name and password, connect your device, then get back to home Wi-Fi.
Quick fix
Make sure Wi-Fi Direct is turned on in the printer's settings, then view or print its Wi-Fi Direct details to get the network name (usually starting with DIRECT-) and password. Join that network on your device, print, then switch back to your home Wi-Fi. If the printer is already on your home network, it's simpler to print over that.
Didn’t work? Go to the full stepsYou might see
- The printer's DIRECT- network doesn't appear in your Wi-Fi list
- Your device asks for a password you don't know
- You connect, but the printer doesn't appear when you print
- Your phone or laptop loses internet while connected
- The connection drops after a few minutes or when the printer sleeps
Usually caused by
- Wi-Fi Direct turned off on the printer
- Wrong or changed Wi-Fi Direct password
- The printer's limit on connected devices reached
- Your device switching back to a network with internet
- No driver or printing app set up on the computer
Step-by-step fix
Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

-
Turn on Wi-Fi Direct
On the control panel, open the wireless or network settings and look for Wi-Fi Direct (some printers call it Wireless Direct), or tap a Wi-Fi Direct icon on the home screen if there is one. Turn it on. On printers without a screen, the manual explains how to switch it on with a button press.
-
Find the network name and password
The details appear on the screen under the Wi-Fi Direct settings, or on a printed network configuration or Wi-Fi Direct page. The network name usually starts with DIRECT- followed by a few characters and often the model. If you change or regenerate the password, every device has to reconnect with the new one.
-
Approve the connection and check the limit
Some printers ask you to accept each new connection on the control panel within a short time, so watch the screen as you connect. Printers also allow only a few devices on Wi-Fi Direct at once, so disconnect devices you aren't using, or turn Wi-Fi Direct off and on to clear old connections.
-
Restart the printer
Turn the printer off with its power button, wait 30 seconds and turn it on. Give it a minute or two after startup before looking for the DIRECT- network, as it can take a moment to appear.
Windows 11 / 10

-
Join the printer's network
Select the network icon on the taskbar, open the list of Wi-Fi networks, choose the DIRECT- network and enter its password. Windows will probably show No internet, which is expected, because the printer's network isn't connected to the internet.
-
Add the printer while connected
Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and select Add device (Windows 10: Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners > Add a printer or scanner). If the printer doesn't appear, install the driver package from the manufacturer's official support site, which can usually set up a Wi-Fi Direct connection for you.
-
Print, then switch back
Print your document, then reconnect to your home Wi-Fi from the same network list. Windows remembers both networks, but you'll need to switch to the DIRECT- network each time you want to print this way.
iPhone, iPad and Android

-
Join the DIRECT- network
Open your Wi-Fi settings, choose the printer's DIRECT- network and enter its password. Your phone may warn that the network has no internet; that's expected.
-
Print over the direct connection
On iPhone or iPad, tap Share > Print (or Print in the app's menu) and choose the printer; many printers support AirPrint over Wi-Fi Direct. On Android, choose Print in the app, pick the printer and allow the connection if asked.
-
Stop the phone switching away
Phones may leave a network without internet and drop back to home Wi-Fi or mobile data. If Android asks whether to stay connected, choose to stay. If it keeps switching, temporarily turn off any setting that moves you off Wi-Fi without internet, and turn it back on after printing.
-
Rejoin your home Wi-Fi
When you've finished, rejoin your home network so your phone has internet again. If you print often, setting the printer up on your home Wi-Fi saves this step.
Did this fix it?
Good. To confirm everything is healthy, print a test page. It takes a minute and shows any quality problems early.

Common questions
What is Wi-Fi Direct?
It's a small, private Wi-Fi network that the printer creates itself, so a phone or computer can connect to it without a router. It's handy where there's no Wi-Fi, or for visitors you'd rather not give your home Wi-Fi password.
Why does my phone lose internet on Wi-Fi Direct?
The printer's network isn't connected to the internet. Your phone may use mobile data in the meantime, or you can switch back to home Wi-Fi as soon as you've printed.
Is Wi-Fi Direct secure?
It's protected by a password, so keep that private. If you never use Wi-Fi Direct, turn it off in the printer's settings.
