Independent printer help. Not affiliated with any printer manufacturer.

These independent tips are for people who own Samsung laser printers and multifunction printers. This site has no connection to Samsung or HP. HP acquired Samsung's printer business in a deal completed in 2017, so drivers, firmware and support for Samsung printers now come through HP's official support site, which this page links to.

Common problems with Samsung printers

Finding drivers after the move to HP

Samsung's own websites generally direct printer owners to HP. Search HP's official support site for your Samsung model number, which is printed on the front of the printer or on the label at the back, and choose your operating system. Download only from HP's site rather than third-party driver sites, which can bundle unwanted software.

Older printers on Windows 11 and recent macOS

Many Samsung printers were designed before Windows 11 and current macOS versions. Check HP's site for the newest driver for your model; if none is listed, the driver Windows offers when you add the printer may still handle basic printing, and many network models work with AirPrint on a Mac. Scanning and status utilities are the parts most likely to lack current versions.

Toner low or not recognized after a change

Samsung toner cartridges carry a chip that reports toner level. A low-toner or unrecognized message right after a change often means the cartridge isn't fully seated or doesn't match the model. If the printer has just been printing, let it cool for a few minutes, because the fuser gets hot. Then remove the cartridge, rock it gently side to side to spread the toner, reinstall it firmly and check the cartridge code in the manual.

Imaging unit and drum messages

Some Samsung models, especially color lasers, use a separate imaging unit or drum that lasts longer than the toner. When the printer says it is near the end of its life, prints may show faint areas, gray backgrounds or repeating marks. Replace the part the message names with the one listed for your model; changing the toner alone won't clear it.

Wi-Fi setup and offline printers

Many Samsung wireless models can join Wi-Fi from the control panel, with a WPS button, or through the setup software in the driver package. If the printer drops offline after a router change, reconnect it to the new network, then remove and re-add it on your computer so it uses the current address.

Paper jams in compact lasers

Small Samsung lasers often jam on curled, damp or overfilled paper. Turn the printer off, let it cool, and pull jammed paper out slowly in the direction it normally travels so it doesn't tear. Load paper below the tray's limit mark and keep the paper guides snug against the stack.

Tips for Samsung owners

  • Note your exact model number before searching HP's support site; Samsung model names include letters and numbers that distinguish different versions.
  • Type the printer's IP address into a browser to open its built-in web page, called SyncThru Web Service on many Samsung models, for status, supplies and network settings.
  • If you installed Samsung's full software package, it may include a utility such as Samsung Easy Printer Manager for checking status and settings. If it no longer runs on your system, the printer's built-in web page covers many of the same settings.
  • Check the toner cartridge code on the old cartridge or in the manual before buying; cartridges for similar-looking models often aren't interchangeable.
