Quick fix

If your printer has a document feeder, load all the pages there and choose PDF as the file type, and the whole stack is saved as one file. From the glass, use the maker's scan app or the printer's own scan to PDF option, which usually offers an add page or scan more choice after each page.

Didn’t work? Go to the full steps

You might see

  • Every page you scan is saved as its own file
  • There's no option to add another page after the first scan
  • The file type is JPEG or PNG, which holds only one page
  • You have several PDFs that need to become one document

Usually caused by

  • Scanning from the glass in an app that saves one file per scan
  • An image file type selected instead of PDF
  • The feeder not chosen as the scan source
  • A basic scan app without a multipage option

Step-by-step fix

Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

0 of 3 steps tried

  1. Use the document feeder

Load the pages in the feeder, usually face up with the first page on top (check the icon on the tray), choose PDF, and start the scan with the feeder selected as the source. If the printer supports two-sided scanning, double-sided originals can go in together.

  2. Use the printer's next page prompt

When scanning from the glass to a USB drive, email or the maker's app, many printers ask whether to scan another page after each one, as long as PDF is the file type. Place the next page and confirm each time, then choose done or finish to save a single file.

  3. Check the file type

JPEG and PNG hold one image each, so a multipage scan in those formats is always split into separate files. Choose PDF, or a multipage TIFF if your software offers it.

Common questions

Why does Windows save each scanned page as a separate file?

Scans from the glass in the Windows Scan app are usually saved one file per scan. Use the feeder, the maker's scan app, or combine the files afterwards.

Can I add a page to a PDF I scanned earlier?

Yes. On a Mac, open it in Preview and insert the new page from the thumbnail sidebar. On Windows, use a PDF editor or a maker's scan app that can add pages to an existing file.
