Printer prints an extra blank page
An empty sheet comes out at the end of every job or between jobs. Find hidden page breaks, separator pages, paper size mismatches and driver settings that cause it.
Quick fix
Check the page count in the print preview. If the preview shows the extra page, it's part of the document: delete the empty paragraphs or page break at the end. If the preview shows the right number of pages, turn off separator or cover pages and check whether two sheets are feeding together.
Didn’t work? Go to the full stepsYou might see
- A blank sheet comes out after the last page of a document
- Every print job starts or ends with an empty page
- The print preview shows one more page than you expect
- Blank sheets come out stuck to printed ones
Usually caused by
- Empty paragraphs, page breaks or a table pushing content onto a new page
- Separator or cover pages turned on
- Document paper size larger than the paper in the printer
- Excel print area including empty formatted cells
- Two sheets feeding at once
- A generic driver adding a page feed at the end of each job
Step-by-step fix
Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

-
Show hidden marks in Word
In Word, press Ctrl + Shift + 8 to show paragraph marks and breaks. Delete empty paragraphs, a page break or a section break at the very end. Removing a section break can change the layout of the last section, so look it over afterwards.
-
Fix a table at the bottom of a page
Word always keeps a paragraph after a table. If the table fills the page, that paragraph spills onto a new, blank page. Select the paragraph mark after the table and set its font size to 1 and its spacing before and after to 0.
-
Set the print area in Excel
Formatting or stray spaces in cells away from your data make Excel print extra pages. Select the cells you want and choose Page Layout > Print Area > Set Print Area. If one column spills onto its own page, choose Fit All Columns on One Page in the scaling setting on the print page.
-
Turn off separator pages
Open Printer properties, go to the Advanced tab and click Separator Page. If a file is listed, clear the box and click OK. Some printers also have a job separator or banner page option in their own menu or built-in web page.
-
Match the paper size
If the document is set to A4 but the printer has Letter paper, or the other way round, the bottom of each page can be pushed onto an extra sheet. In Word, check Layout > Size and make sure it matches the paper size in Printing preferences.
-
Check the driver
In Printing preferences, look for options such as skip blank pages or job separation. Generic drivers such as Generic / Text Only can add a page feed after every job, so install the driver for your exact model from Windows Update or the manufacturer's official website.

Show invisible characters
First check the preview in the print window. If it shows the extra page, press Command + 8 in Word for Mac, or choose View > Show Invisibles in Pages, and delete empty paragraphs or breaks at the end. The Word table fix above works the same way on a Mac.
-
Turn off the cover page
If your print window has Cover Page options, make sure no cover page is set to print before or after the document. If a saved preset includes one, choose Default Settings in the Presets menu.
-
Match the paper size
Choose File > Page Setup if the app has it, or check Paper Size in the print window, and match it to the paper loaded, such as US Letter or A4.

Check for two sheets feeding
If the blank sheet comes out pressed against a printed one, the printer is picking up two sheets at once. Fan the stack, don't overfill the tray, and use paper from a fresh, dry pack.
-
Test the printer on its own
Print a test or configuration page from the printer's own menu. If a blank sheet follows it, look for a separator or banner page setting in the printer's menu or built-in web page.
-
Check two-sided printing
When you print on both sides, a document with an odd number of pages leaves the back of the last sheet blank. That's normal, not an extra page.
Did this fix it?
Good. To confirm everything is healthy, print a test page. It takes a minute and shows any quality problems early.

Common questions
Why does Word add a blank page I can't delete?
It's usually the paragraph Word keeps after a table, or a section break. Show formatting marks, then shrink that paragraph to 1 point or delete the break.
Why does a web page print with an extra, nearly blank page?
Browsers split web pages at fixed points, so a few lines or the site's footer can spill onto one more sheet. Print a page range that leaves it out, or reduce the scale slightly.
