Double-sided printing not working
Two-sided option missing, greyed out or printing the back upside down? Check your printer supports it, enable the duplex unit and fix flip settings.
Quick fix
First check that your printer supports automatic two-sided printing; many budget models only do it manually. If it does, choose the two-sided or duplex option in the print dialog, with flip on long edge for normal portrait pages. If the option is missing or greyed out, enable the duplex unit in the printer's properties or install the maker's full driver.
Didn’t work? Go to the full stepsYou might see
- The two-sided or duplex option is missing or greyed out
- Only one side prints even with two-sided selected
- The back of each page prints upside down
- Paper jams when it comes back in for the second side
Usually caused by
- The printer only supports manual two-sided printing
- The duplex unit isn't enabled in the driver settings
- A basic driver that doesn't show duplex options
- Paper the duplexer can't handle, such as photo paper or envelopes
- Flip set to the wrong edge
Safety first. If you remove the duplex unit or open the rear door to clear paper, power off and unplug first, and let a laser printer cool.
Step-by-step fix
Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

-
Choose two-sided in the print dialog
Look for a two-sided, duplex or print on both sides option. In classic dialogs it's often behind the Printer Properties or Preferences button; in the modern Windows 11 print window, check under More settings. Use flip on long edge for portrait pages and short edge for landscape or top-bound pages.
-
Enable the duplex unit
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select your printer and click Printer properties. If there's a Device Settings tab, find the duplex unit under installable options, set it to Installed and click OK.
-
Install the full driver
If Windows added the printer automatically, it may be using a basic driver with limited options. Download the full driver package for your model from the maker's official support site, install it, and print again.
-
Make it the default
To print two-sided every time, turn it on in Printing preferences rather than in each app's dialog.

-
Turn on two-sided printing
In the print dialog, turn on Two-Sided or Double-sided; the name and position vary between macOS versions, and on some it's in the Layout section. Choose long-edge binding for normal portrait documents.
-
Enable the duplex option
Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners, click your printer, then Options & Supplies > Options. If there's a duplex or two-sided unit checkbox, turn it on and click OK.
-
Re-add the printer
If the option still doesn't appear, Control-click the printer in the list and remove it, then click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax, select it again and choose AirPrint or the maker's driver from the Use menu.

Confirm automatic duplex support
Check your manual or the specifications on the maker's site for automatic two-sided printing. Printers with manual duplex print the odd pages first, then ask you to flip and reload the stack.
-
Use supported paper
Automatic duplex usually works only with plain paper in standard sizes and weights. Photo paper, envelopes, labels and card must be printed one side at a time.
-
Seat the duplex unit
On printers with a removable duplex unit or rear door, take it out, check for scraps of paper, and push it back until it clicks. A loose unit can cause one-sided prints or jams.
-
Learn your manual duplex direction
For manual duplex, make a small pen mark near the top edge of a blank sheet, load it, and print a one-page document. See which side and which end the print landed on, then reload flipped stacks the same way every time.
Did this fix it?
Good. To confirm everything is healthy, print a test page. It takes a minute and shows any quality problems early.

Common questions
How do I know if my printer has automatic duplex?
Look in the specifications for automatic two-sided or auto duplex printing. If it only says manual, the printer will ask you to flip pages yourself.
Why is the back of my page upside down?
The flip setting is wrong. Use flip on long edge for portrait pages bound like a book, and short edge for landscape or top-bound pages.
