Quick fix

Most printers estimate ink use rather than measuring it, so start by reseating the cartridge and doing a power reset. On ink tank printers, check the tanks by eye and confirm the refill in the printer's menu if your model asks for it. Refilled cartridges often show empty or unknown even when full.

You might see

  • A new or refilled cartridge shows as low, empty or unknown
  • The level never goes down, or drops suddenly
  • Low ink warnings appear long before print quality changes
  • An ink tank printer shows the wrong level after a refill

Usually caused by

  • Levels are estimated from usage, not measured
  • The chip on a refilled cartridge still records the old level
  • Ink tank level not reset after a refill, on models that need it
  • The cartridge isn't being read properly
  • Outdated printer software showing stale information

Safety first. Inkjet cartridges are changed with the printer switched on, so wait for the carriage to stop and touch only the cartridge, never the nozzles or copper contacts.

Step-by-step fix

Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

  1. Know that levels are estimates

Most cartridge printers count drops or pages to estimate what's left, and warn early on purpose. You can usually keep printing until text or colors start to fade, so have a spare ready rather than swapping straight away.

  2. Reseat and power reset

Take the cartridge out, check its contacts are clean, and click it back in. Then, with the printer on, unplug it for 60 seconds, plug it back in and let it re-read the cartridges.

  3. Check ink tanks by eye

On tank printers, the see-through tanks show what's really left. Some models only update the level after you confirm a refill on the control panel, so follow the refill prompts or the reset steps in your manual each time you top up.

  4. Expect odd readings from refills

A refilled cartridge's chip usually remembers it was empty, so the printer may show it as empty, unknown or non-original. That's normal; many printers let you dismiss the message and continue, so judge the level by print quality.

  5. Print a status report

Print a status or supplies report from the printer's menu and compare it with your computer. If the printer's report looks right but your computer doesn't, the computer software is out of date.

Common questions

How accurate are ink level warnings?

They're estimates. Most printers warn early on purpose, and how much is really left depends on what you print.

Is it bad to keep printing when the gauge says empty?

Printing until quality fades is fine on most printers. Some stop at a set minimum to avoid running the print head dry, which is by design.

Why does my ink tank printer still show full?

On some models the level is only an estimate based on your last refill confirmation. Check the tank itself and reset the level after each refill.
