Firmware is the software that runs inside the printer. Updates fix bugs, improve Wi-Fi reliability, close security holes and add support for new versions of Windows and macOS. The process is usually simple, but an interrupted update can leave the printer unable to start, so prepare first and leave it alone while it runs.

  1. Check the current version

Print a configuration or status report, or look in the printer's settings for About, Printer information or a firmware version entry. Write the version down so you can confirm the update worked.

  2. Read what the update changes

On the manufacturer's official support site, find your exact model and read the release notes. Some updates change which cartridges the printer accepts, so if you use non-original cartridges, check this before updating. Security and Wi-Fi fixes are good reasons to update even if the printer seems fine.

  3. Prepare power, paper and connection

Make sure the printer is on a power outlet you won't need to switch off, has a steady network or USB connection, and isn't in the middle of a job. Load some paper in case it prints a confirmation page.

  4. Use the printer's own update menu

On models with a screen and an internet connection, look for Firmware update, Printer update or Check for updates under Setup, Settings, Tools or Maintenance. The printer downloads the update directly from the manufacturer. Many models also let you turn automatic updates on or off here.

  5. Or download from the official website

If there is no update menu, download the firmware updater for your exact model and operating system from the manufacturer's official support site. Never use firmware from third-party download sites, pop-ups or links in emails. Then follow the Windows or macOS steps.

  6. Leave it alone until it finishes

The update can take several minutes and may restart the printer more than once. Never turn off or unplug the printer, disconnect its cable or close the updater during this time. Wait until the printer returns to its normal home screen or ready light.

  7. Confirm the new version

Print another configuration report and check that the firmware version has changed. Then print a test page from your computer to make sure everything still works.

Tips

  • If Wi-Fi dropouts or printing problems began after a Windows or macOS update, check for new printer firmware; makers often release fixes for new system versions.
  • Only install firmware meant for your exact model. Similar model numbers can use different firmware.

Common questions

Do I have to update my printer firmware?

Not always. If the printer works well, updating is optional, but security and Wi-Fi fixes are good reasons to install updates, especially on a printer connected to your network.

What happens if the update is interrupted?

Some printers recover and retry the update automatically when switched back on. If yours shows an error or won't start, check the manufacturer's support site for recovery instructions for your model.

Can a firmware update stop non-original cartridges from working?

It can on some printers, and most printers can't go back to older firmware afterwards. Read the release notes before updating, and check whether your printer lets you turn off automatic updates.
