Double-sided printing, also called duplex printing, puts content on both sides of each sheet and roughly halves the paper you use. Printers with an automatic duplexer turn the sheet over for you. On printers without one, you print the first side, reload the stack and print the other, which is called manual duplex. The product specifications or your printer's driver settings show which type you have.

Steps

Tips

  • Test with a two-page document numbered 1 and 2 before printing something long, so you can check the flip edge and page order.
  • Use paper of about 80 to 90 g/m² (20 to 24 lb). Thinner paper lets print show through from the other side.
  • Automatic duplexers usually handle only plain paper in common sizes such as Letter and A4. Envelopes, labels, card and glossy photo paper normally need one-sided printing.
  • If a sheet jams inside the duplex unit, turn the printer off and unplug it before you open the rear cover or remove the unit. On a laser printer, let the fuser area cool first, as it gets hot.
  • Expect two-sided jobs to print more slowly. Inkjet printers pause to let the first side dry before printing the second.

Common questions

Why is the back of each page upside down?

The flip edge doesn't match the page orientation. Switch between flip on long edge and flip on short edge; for most portrait documents, long edge is correct.

Why is the two-sided option greyed out or missing?

The printer may not have an automatic duplexer, the driver may not know one is installed, or the paper size or type you chose can't be duplexed. Check the duplex setting in the printer properties, choose plain paper in a standard size, or use manual duplex.

Can I print double-sided if my printer has no duplexer?

Yes, with manual duplex. Use the driver's manual two-sided option, Word's manual option, or print the odd pages first and the even pages second, reloading the stack in between.
