Quick fix

Install the full driver package for your scanner from the maker's official support site, not just the basic driver Windows adds, and restart. Then choose your scanner in the app's scan or select source menu, trying both the TWAIN and WIA versions if both are listed. If that fails, scan with Windows Scan or the maker's app and import the file.

Didn’t work? Go to the full steps

You might see

  • The app says no TWAIN source or no scanner was found
  • Windows says you need a WIA driver to use this device
  • The scanner works in Windows Scan or the maker's app but not in your other program
  • Your scanner is missing from the app's list of sources

Usually caused by

  • Only the basic driver installed, without the TWAIN driver
  • A 64-bit app that can't use the maker's 32-bit TWAIN driver, or the reverse
  • The Windows Image Acquisition service stopped
  • A network scanner the driver hasn't been pointed at
  • No driver for your Windows version or for an Arm-based PC

Step-by-step fix

Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

  1. Know which kind your app needs

TWAIN and WIA are two ways an app talks to a scanner. WIA is built into Windows and used by apps such as Windows Scan, while TWAIN drivers come in the maker's software package and are used by many photo, document and business apps. An app that only supports TWAIN can't see a scanner that has only a WIA driver.

  2. Install the full driver package

Download the full driver or full software package for your exact model and Windows version from the maker's official support site; the TWAIN driver is usually part of it, sometimes listed separately as a scan driver. Restart the PC after installing.

  3. Choose the source in your app

Many apps have a Select Source or scanner choice in their scan or import menu, separate from the scan command itself. Pick the entry named after your scanner, and if there's both a WIA and a TWAIN version, try the other one.

  4. Match 32-bit and 64-bit

A 64-bit app can use only 64-bit TWAIN drivers, and a 32-bit app only 32-bit ones. Many older scanner drivers are 32-bit only, so newer 64-bit apps can't list them. Check the maker's site for a 64-bit TWAIN driver, or use a 32-bit version of your app if one is offered.

  5. Restart Windows Image Acquisition

Press Win + R, type services.msc and press Enter. Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), right-click it and choose Restart, or Start if it isn't running.

    services.msc
  6. Test with Windows Scan

Install the free Windows Scan app from the Microsoft Store. If it scans, the hardware and WIA driver work and the problem is the TWAIN driver or your app; you can scan here and open the file in your app meanwhile.

  7. Reinstall the software cleanly

If the source is listed but gives an error, uninstall the maker's software in Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 10: Apps & features), remove the device from Printers & scanners, restart, and install the latest package again.

  8. Check for an Arm-compatible driver

On a Windows PC with an Arm processor, many older scan drivers won't install or run. Use Windows Scan, which works with many scanners without the maker's driver, and check the maker's site for a driver that supports Arm.

Common questions

What is the difference between TWAIN and WIA?

Both let apps control a scanner. WIA is part of Windows and offers basic controls, while TWAIN drivers come from the scanner's maker and often offer more options, which is why many professional apps use them.

Why does my scanner work in Windows Scan but not in another app?

Windows Scan uses WIA, which Windows can often provide by itself. Your other app probably needs the maker's TWAIN driver, which has to be installed separately.

Does a Mac use TWAIN?

Mostly not. macOS has its own scanning system, used by Image Capture and Preview, and most scanners work through it. A few Mac apps and drivers still rely on TWAIN.
