Quick fix

Check the three most common causes first: an open cover or door, paper that's run out or jammed, and an empty or badly seated cartridge. Close every cover, reload the paper, reseat the cartridges, then turn the printer off and on with its power button. The exact meaning of each light pattern for your model is in its manual.

You might see

  • An orange, amber or red light flashes and nothing prints
  • A light next to a drop, triangle, page or exclamation mark is flashing
  • The power light blinks along with another light
  • Several lights flash together or one after another
  • The light comes back as soon as you turn the printer on

Usually caused by

  • Paper empty, misloaded or jammed
  • Ink or toner cartridge empty, missing or not seated
  • A cover, door or tray not fully closed
  • Torn paper or an object blocking the carriage or paper path
  • A firmware or hardware fault, often shown by every light flashing

Safety first. Turn the printer off and unplug it before reaching inside to look for paper or objects, and let a laser printer cool first because the fuser gets hot.

Step-by-step fix

Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

  1. Read the symbol next to the light

Most printers put a small symbol beside each light. A drop or cartridge points to ink or toner, a sheet of paper points to the paper supply, and a triangle or exclamation mark usually means general attention, such as a jam or an open cover. A Wi-Fi symbol relates to the network rather than a printing fault. If your printer has a screen, its message gives more detail than the lights.

  2. Check the message on your computer or phone

The print queue, the maker's app or your phone's print screen often shows the error in words. On Windows, open the printer's queue from Printers & scanners; on a Mac, open System Settings > Printers & Scanners, select the printer and click Printer Queue.

  3. Close every cover and door

Open and firmly close the front cover, the ink or toner access door, the scanner lid and any rear door or duplex unit. Each should click shut. A latch that doesn't catch, or a broken tab on a door, can make the printer think it's still open.

  4. Reload paper and look for scraps

Take the paper out, square the stack, put it back under the maximum fill mark and slide the guides against its edges. Then turn the printer off, unplug it and shine a flashlight into the paper path and output area for torn pieces. After clearing a jam, plug in, turn on and press the OK, Resume or Continue button if the printer asks.

  5. Reseat the ink or toner

Open the access door, wait for the carriage to stop on an inkjet, and press each cartridge in until it clicks. Make sure any protective tape or cap on a new cartridge has been removed. Steady and flashing ink lights mean different things on different brands (low on one, empty or not recognized on another), so check the manual before buying ink.

  6. Note the pattern and look it up

Some printers report errors with a set number of flashes followed by a pause, or by alternating two lights. Watch for a minute, write down which lights flash, their colors and how many times, and look up that pattern in the troubleshooting or light-pattern section of the manual or on the manufacturer's official support site.

  7. Do a full power reset

Turn the printer off with its power button, unplug it from the wall and the printer, and wait 60 seconds. Plug it straight into a wall outlet rather than a power strip and turn it on. A one-off glitch usually clears; a real fault returns within a minute or two.

  8. If every light is flashing

All lights flashing together, or a pattern that doesn't match any paper, ink or cover symbol, usually means an internal error such as a blocked carriage, a firmware problem or a failed part. After a power reset, check the carriage path for obstructions. If the pattern comes back, note it down and contact the manufacturer through its official support website.

Common questions

What does a blinking orange light on a printer mean?

It means the printer needs attention before it can print. Most often that's paper, ink or toner, an open cover or a jam, but the exact meaning depends on the model, so check the manual for your light pattern.

Why is the power light blinking when there is no error light?

Usually the printer is busy: warming up, processing a job, cleaning the print head or cancelling a job. Give it a few minutes. If it keeps blinking for more than about 10 minutes without printing, do a full power reset.

Can I keep printing while the light is on?

A steady low-ink or low-toner warning usually lets you keep printing. A flashing error light normally stops printing until you fix the cause.
