Quick fix

Load fresh paper from a sealed ream, set the paper type to match it, and make sure the guides are snug but not tight. On a laser printer, open the rear output door if your model has one for a straighter exit, and choose a lighter paper setting if pages curl.

You might see

  • Pages curl up at the edges or roll into a tube
  • Diagonal creases or wrinkles across the sheet
  • Inkjet pages turn wavy where there's heavy ink coverage
  • Envelopes come out wrinkled or folded

Usually caused by

  • Paper that has absorbed moisture
  • Paper type set heavier than the paper, so a laser fuser runs too hot
  • Heavy ink coverage soaking plain paper on inkjets
  • Sheets feeding at an angle because the guides are loose
  • Worn rollers or fuser, or envelopes unsuited to the printer

Safety first. Turn off and unplug the printer before checking inside, and on laser printers let the fuser cool before touching anything near the rear output.

Step-by-step fix

Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

0 of 5 steps tried

  1. Use dry paper

Paper soaks up moisture from humid air and then curls when heated or wetted by ink. Keep it sealed and flat, don't leave a large stack in the tray for weeks, and try flipping the stack over in the tray.

  2. Use the straight paper path (laser)

Many laser printers have a rear output door; opening it lets pages exit straight out instead of curling around the internal rollers. Use it for card, labels and envelopes too.

  3. Use heavier paper for heavy ink

Plain paper ripples when soaked with ink, which is called cockling. For photos, graphics or full-page color, use heavier inkjet or photo paper.

  4. Fix crooked feeding

Diagonal creases usually mean the sheet entered at an angle. Set the guides snugly, don't overfill the tray, and check the paper path for a scrap or obstruction.

  5. Print envelopes the right way

Use envelopes suited to your printer type and load them as your manual shows. Some laser printers have envelope levers near the rear that reduce pressure on envelopes; your manual will say if yours does.

Common questions

Why do my laser prints curl but inkjet prints do not?

A laser printer heats paper to melt toner, driving moisture out of one side faster than the other. Dry paper and the right paper setting reduce the effect.

Is it normal for inkjet prints to look wavy?

Some waviness is normal on plain paper with lots of ink. Heavier inkjet paper and the correct paper setting greatly reduce it.
