Quick fix

Look at the tanks themselves: the ink you can see is the real level. Then check whether your model expects you to confirm the refill or reset the level on the control panel, in the maker's app or with a button, as the refilling section of your manual describes. Only confirm colors you actually filled to the upper line.

Didn’t work? Go to the full steps

You might see

  • The panel, app or computer still shows low or empty after a refill
  • The printer keeps asking you to refill a tank that's visibly full
  • On-screen ink bars don't match what you see in the tanks
  • Printing stops with a refill message although there's ink above the lower line

Usually caused by

  • The model estimates levels and needs you to confirm or reset them after filling
  • The refill was confirmed for the wrong color, or not confirmed at all
  • A partial top-up that the estimate can't account for
  • Cleaning cycles using more or less ink than the estimate assumes
  • The app or computer showing an older reading until it reconnects

Safety first. Keep ink bottles capped and out of reach of children and pets, wipe any drips around the tanks with a paper towel, and wash ink off skin with soap and water, since it stains and must not be swallowed.

Step-by-step fix

Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

Any ink tank printer

0 of 7 steps tried

  1. Check the tanks by eye

Stand the printer level and look at each tank from the front in good light. Note where each color sits between the lower and upper lines. On almost every ink tank printer, this is the reading to trust.

  2. Look for a refill prompt

Some models show a prompt after you close the tank cover, asking which colors you filled or whether you filled to the upper line. Answer it for each color you filled. If you dismissed it, use the manual method in the next step.

  3. Reset the level where your model needs it

On printers without ink sensors, the level is a counter that only resets when you tell it to. Depending on the model, that's an option on the panel (often under Maintenance or an ink menu), an option in the maker's app, or a button you hold for a few seconds. Check your manual rather than guessing, since on some models a held button starts a cleaning instead.

  4. Only confirm colors you actually filled

Confirming a refill tells the printer that tank is full. If you only topped a tank up halfway and confirm it as full, the real ink will run out before the estimate does, so watch that tank and refill when it nears the lower line.

  5. Give sensor-equipped models a moment

Some models detect ink levels with sensors instead of estimating. Close all covers, turn the printer off with its power button, turn it back on and wait a minute. If a full tank still reads empty, contact the manufacturer through its official support website.

  6. Refresh the app or computer

The maker's app and your computer only show what the printer last reported. Once the printer's own panel shows the right level, close and reopen the app; if it still shows an old reading, rely on the panel or the tanks.

  7. Expect estimates to drift

Counters work out ink use from pages printed and cleaning cycles run, which can't be exact. Standard cleaning, power cleaning and the initial ink charge all use amounts the estimate only approximates, so look at the tanks every few weeks rather than relying on the gauge.

Common questions

Can I ignore the low ink warning?

On most tank printers you can, as long as you can see ink above the lower line. Don't let any tank drop below that line, because air can then get into the ink path.

Why does my printer stop when the tanks clearly have ink?

Some models stop when their counter reaches empty, as protection against running dry. Filling to the upper line and confirming the refill lets them carry on.

Should I reset the level just to stop the warnings?

No. Reset only after a real refill to the upper line; otherwise the printer may let a tank run dry and draw air into the tubes.
