Quick fix

Place the document face down on the glass, lined up with the corner mark, and close the lid. If you use the document feeder, check which way up your model wants pages. Then set the scan mode to color or grayscale with brightness and contrast at their defaults, and preview before scanning.

You might see

  • The scanned file is completely white or blank
  • The scan is solid black or very dark
  • Only part of the page appears
  • Copies come out blank even though computer prints work

Usually caused by

  • Document placed the wrong way up
  • Brightness, contrast or threshold set to an extreme
  • Black and white or text mode erasing faint originals
  • Lid open during scanning, or the wrong source or scan area chosen
  • Transport lock engaged on some standalone flatbed scanners
  • A failing scanner lamp or sensor

Step-by-step fix

Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

Any scanner or all-in-one printer

0 of 5 steps tried

  1. Check the placement

On the glass, the side you want scanned faces down, lined up with the arrow or mark in the corner. In the document feeder, many models want pages face up, but check the small icon beside the feeder. Remove staples and sticky notes.

  2. Close the lid

An open lid can turn the background black and confuse auto-cropping. Close it fully, or for thick books press it down gently and check with a preview.

  3. Make a copy

Copy the page on the printer. A good copy means the scanner works and the problem is in your computer's scan settings; a blank or black copy means the scanner hardware is at fault.

  4. Watch for the scan light

Lift the lid slightly during a copy and watch for a light bar moving under the glass, without staring into it. No light, or a dim or flickering one, points to a lamp or sensor fault.

  5. Check for a transport lock

Some standalone flatbed scanners have a shipping lock switch underneath or on the side; while locked, the scan head can't move. Most all-in-one printers don't have one, so check your manual.

Common questions

Why does my scan have black edges?

That's usually the open lid, or a scan area larger than the document. Close the lid and use the preview to set the area to the page.

Why is my scan completely white?

The page may be facing the wrong way, or black and white or text mode is erasing everything. Flip the page and switch to color or grayscale.
