Add a printer on a Mac
Need to add a printer to your Mac, or re-add one that stopped working? Use Printers and Scanners, choose AirPrint or a driver, or add it by IP address.
Quick fix
Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners, click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax, select your printer and click Add. If it isn't listed, click the IP tab, type the printer's IP address, choose IPP as the protocol and click Add.

- Your printer doesn't appear in the print dialog
- The printer isn't listed when you click Add
- The printer was added but prints nothing or shows the wrong options
- You've moved to a new Mac or a new printer
Usually caused by
- The printer hasn't been added to this Mac yet
- Mac and printer on different networks
- Network discovery blocked, so the printer must be added by IP address
- An old or unsuitable driver selected
Step-by-step fix
Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.
macOS
0 of 9 steps tried
-
Open Printers and Scanners
Choose the Apple menu, then System Settings, and click Printers & Scanners in the sidebar. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
-
Pick the printer from the list
Printers found on your network or connected by USB appear on the Default tab. Select yours, give it a name you'll recognize if you have several, and wait a moment for the Use menu to fill in.
-
Choose AirPrint or the maker's driver
In the Use menu, AirPrint works without installing anything and suits most current printers. Choose the maker's driver only if you need a feature AirPrint lacks, such as extra trays or finishing options, and only if the maker lists it as supporting your macOS version. Then click Add.
-
Add it by IP address
If the printer isn't listed, find its IP address on its network status page, click the IP tab and type the address. Choose IPP in the Protocol menu first; if that doesn't work, try HP Jetdirect – Socket, which many printers from other makers also support, or LPD. Leave Queue blank unless the printer's manual gives a value.
-
Select a driver for an IP printer
With IPP, the Mac can often choose AirPrint by itself. For socket or LPD, choose the maker's driver if you've installed it, or a generic PostScript or PCL driver if the printer supports that language, then click Add.
-
Remove and re-add a printer that stopped working
Select the printer in Printers & Scanners and choose Remove Printer, or Control-click it and choose the remove option. Restart the Mac and add it again, which rebuilds its settings and queue.
-
Allow local network access for apps
On macOS 15 and later, if the maker's app can't find the printer, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network and switch the app on.
-
Reset the printing system as a last resort
Control-click in the printer list and choose Reset printing system. This removes every printer and its queued jobs, so you'll need to add all your printers again afterwards.
-
On macOS 12 or earlier
On macOS 12 Monterey and earlier, open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and click the add (+) button below the list. The same Default and IP tabs appear.
Any network or USB printer
0 of 3 steps tried
-
Check the printer is on the same network
Make sure the printer is on and connected to the same network as your Mac, not a guest network. Print a network status page from the printer's menu to see its network name and IP address.
-
Reserve its IP address
If you add the printer by IP address, reserve that address for it in your router's DHCP settings, so it doesn't change later and break the connection.
-
Connect USB printers directly
For USB, plug the cable straight into the Mac or a powered hub. Macs with only USB-C ports need a USB-C to USB-B cable or an adapter. The printer usually appears on the Default tab within a minute.
Did this fix it?
Good. To confirm everything is healthy, print a test page. It takes a minute and shows any quality problems early.

Common questions
Should I use AirPrint or the maker's driver on a Mac?
Use AirPrint if your printer supports it; it's built into macOS and keeps working through macOS updates. Use the maker's driver only when you need a feature AirPrint doesn't offer.
Why doesn't my printer appear in the add window?
The Mac finds printers with Bonjour, which doesn't cross between separate networks and can be blocked by guest network or VPN settings. Adding the printer by IP address usually works around this.
Should I remove the old printer before adding it again?
Yes. Duplicate entries for the same printer make it easy to print to the wrong one, so remove the old entry first.
