Quick fix

On the printer's control panel, check the paper size and type set for each tray and make them match the paper actually loaded. Then set the paper source in your print settings to the tray you want, or to automatic selection. Most manual feed prompts appear because no tray is set to the size and type the job asks for.

Didn’t work? Go to the full steps

You might see

  • Jobs pull paper from the multipurpose or bypass tray instead of the main tray
  • The printer shows a manual feed message and waits
  • A second tray is never used, even when the first is empty
  • Letterhead or card gets used for ordinary documents

Usually caused by

  • Tray size or type on the printer doesn't match the job
  • Paper source in the app or driver set to one tray or manual feed
  • An optional tray not marked as installed in the driver
  • The multipurpose tray set to feed first whenever it has paper
  • Different defaults in the app, the driver and the printer

Step-by-step fix

Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

Any printer with more than one tray

0 of 4 steps tried

  1. Set each tray on the printer

Open the paper or tray settings on the printer's control panel, or on its web page, and check the size and type assigned to each tray. When a job asks for Letter plain paper and no tray is set to Letter plain, many printers fall back to manual feed or ask you to load a tray. Make each setting match what's really in the tray.

  2. Allow any size or type where it helps

Some printers let a tray accept any size or any type. Setting your main tray this way, where offered, stops jobs stalling over small mismatches. Leave special trays, such as one holding letterhead or labels, set to their own paper type so ordinary jobs skip them.

  3. Check the multipurpose tray

On many laser printers, the multipurpose or bypass tray is used first whenever it holds paper. Take paper out of it when you don't need it, or look in the tray settings for an option that controls whether it's used first.

  4. Match the paper size everywhere

A job set to A4 sent to a printer loaded with Letter, or the reverse, is one of the most common causes of manual feed prompts. Check that the size in your document, in the print settings and on the tray all agree.

Common questions

Why does my printer keep asking for manual feed?

Usually the job asks for a paper size or type that no tray is set to. Matching the tray settings on the printer to the paper, or the job to the tray, stops the prompt.

Can I make one tray the default for everything?

Yes. Set the paper source in your printer's preferences on Windows, or save a preset on a Mac, then check that individual apps aren't overriding it.
