Printer is paused and won't resume
Your printer or print queue says Paused and nothing comes out. Tell a paused printer from a paused job, resume it on Windows or Mac, and stop it pausing again.
Quick fix
Clear any message on the printer's own screen first. Then open the print queue: if the whole printer is paused, untick Pause Printing and Use Printer Offline (Windows) or click Resume (Mac). If only one document shows as paused or on hold, select it and choose Resume.

- The printer or its queue shows the status Paused
- Jobs sit in the queue and nothing prints
- One document says Paused or On Hold while the printer looks ready
- The printer pauses again after a few jobs or after every error
Usually caused by
- Pause Printing or Use Printer Offline switched on in the queue
- A single job paused or put on hold
- macOS pausing the queue after a job failed
- An error or low-ink prompt waiting on the printer
- The computer losing contact with the printer over Wi-Fi or USB
Step-by-step fix
Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.
Windows 11 / 10

-
Open the print queue
Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 10: Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners), select the printer and choose Open print queue. A paused printer holds every job; a paused job holds only that document.
-
Resume a paused printer
If the queue window has a Printer menu, open it and untick both Pause Printing and Use Printer Offline. The second is easy to miss and holds jobs on your PC just like a pause. In the newer Windows 11 queue window, look for a resume option near the top.
-
Resume a paused job
Right-click the document that shows Paused and choose Resume. If it doesn't start within a minute, cancel it and print the document again.
-
Open the classic queue window
If you can't find the pause options, press Win + R, type the command below with your printer's exact name between the quotes, and press Enter. This opens the older queue window, which always has the Printer menu.
rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /o /n "Printer name" -
Clear the message on the printer
Check the printer's screen or lights for a jam, an open cover, an empty tray or a cartridge notice waiting for you to press OK. Some printers hold jobs until you acknowledge a low-ink or non-original cartridge message.
-
Restart the Print Spooler
If the status won't change, select Start, type
cmd, choose Run as administrator and run the command below. It restarts the printing service without removing your printers.net stop spooler && net start spooler -
Stop it dropping offline
If the printer keeps going back to Paused or Offline, your PC is losing contact with it. Reserve a fixed IP address for the printer in your router, then in Printer properties > Ports use a Standard TCP/IP Port with that address instead of a WSD port.
macOS
0 of 4 steps tried
-
Open the printer queue
Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners, select the printer and click Printer Queue. On macOS 12 Monterey and earlier, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and click Open Print Queue.
-
Resume the printer
Clear any jam, empty tray or cartridge prompt on the printer, then click Resume in the queue window's toolbar. macOS pauses a queue by itself when a job can't be completed, such as when the printer was asleep or unreachable, and pauses it again if the error is still showing.
-
Resume held jobs
A job that shows as on hold won't print even when the printer is running. Select it and click Resume. If it still doesn't move, delete it and print again.
-
Remove and add the printer again
If Resume does nothing, select the printer in Printers & Scanners, click Remove Printer, then click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax and add it with AirPrint in the Use menu if it's offered.
Did this fix it?
Good. To confirm everything is healthy, print a test page. It takes a minute and shows any quality problems early.

Common questions
What is the difference between a paused printer and a paused job?
A paused printer holds every job until you resume it. A paused job holds only that document, and resuming the printer won't release it; you resume the job itself.
Why does my Mac keep pausing the printer?
macOS pauses a printer's queue when a job can't be completed, most often because the printer was asleep, offline or showing an error. Fixing the connection or clearing the error stops the repeated pauses.
Does Use Printer Offline mean the printer is broken?
No. It's a setting that tells Windows to keep jobs on your computer instead of sending them. Untick it and waiting jobs go to the printer.
