Ink tank printer is leaking ink
Ink around the tanks or under the printer? Find the source, from a loose cap or open transport lock to a full waste ink pad, and clean up safely.
Quick fix
Turn the printer off, unplug it and put paper towels underneath. Then find where the ink is coming from: around a tank usually means a loose cap or an overfilled tank; after a move, a transport lock that wasn't set; from underneath, possibly a full waste ink pad. Don't plug the printer back in until everything is clean and dry.
Didn’t work? Go to the full stepsYou might see
- Wet ink around one or more tank caps, or on the tank cover
- A puddle or stains under the printer
- Ink inside the printer after it was moved or shipped
- Ink marks on the back or edges of printed pages
Usually caused by
- A tank cap not pressed fully closed, or a tank filled above the upper line
- The printer moved without its transport lock set, or tilted on its side
- Drips from the bottle tip when it was lifted out of the filler
- A full waste ink pad, especially after the counter was reset with an unofficial tool
- A cracked tank or damaged tube, which needs the manufacturer's service
Safety first. Turn the printer off and unplug it before cleaning, wear disposable gloves, protect floors and fabric because ink can stain permanently, keep bottles away from children and pets, and don't plug the printer back in until every wet part is dry.
Step-by-step fix
Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

-
Power off and contain the spill
Turn the printer off with its power button, unplug it, and slide paper towels or old newspaper under and around it. Keep it level; tipping it up to look underneath spreads the ink.
-
Find the source
Wipe the outside dry, then watch where fresh ink appears. Ink around a tank cap or filler points to the tank itself; ink inside the carriage area after a move points to the ink path; a slow seep from the base can come from the waste ink system.
-
Close the caps and check the levels
Press each tank cap firmly into place and close the tank cover. If a tank is above the upper line, the extra ink can push out around the cap. Don't try to pour any back; wipe it clean and let normal printing bring the level down.
-
Check the transport lock after a move
If the leak started after the printer was moved or delivered, look at the transport lock or ink valve lever. Set it to the printing position once the printer is in place, and lock it again before the next move; our guide to moving an ink tank printer covers the steps.
-
Stop drips when refilling
Ink often drips when a bottle is pulled out quickly. After filling, lift the bottle straight up slowly, hold a paper towel under the tip, and wipe the filler before you close the cap.
-
Consider the waste ink system
Ink under the printer with no obvious tank leak can mean the waste ink pad or box is overflowing. That's more likely on an older printer, or one whose waste ink counter was reset with an unofficial tool. Stop printing and read our ink pad end of life fix.
-
Clean up the ink safely
Blot rather than rub, using paper towels or a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water on the outside of the printer. Don't spray cleaners into the printer or near the carriage and contacts. Wash skin with soap and water, and treat fabric straight away, since dried ink is very hard to remove.
-
Let it dry before powering on
Leave the printer unplugged until every wet surface is completely dry, which can take a few hours. Then plug it in, print a nozzle check, and keep paper towels under it for a day to confirm the leak has stopped.
Did this fix it?
Good. To confirm everything is healthy, print a test page. It takes a minute and shows any quality problems early.

Common questions
Is it safe to keep using a leaking printer?
It's best not to. Ink can reach electrical parts and cause faults, so keep the printer unplugged until you've found and fixed the leak.
How do I get printer ink out of clothes or carpet?
Blot up as much as you can straight away, then work from the outside of the stain inward with cold water and a little mild detergent. Some inks, especially pigment black, can leave a permanent mark, so test any stain remover on a hidden area first.
Why does ink leak after moving the printer?
If the transport lock isn't set, tilting or bumping the printer lets ink run out of the tanks and tubes. Keeping it level and locked during the move prevents it.
