Prints are blurry, fuzzy or misaligned
Fuzzy text, doubled lines or content printing crooked or off-center? Align the print head, fix quality and paper settings, and set the paper guides.
Quick fix
Run print head alignment from the printer's control panel or the maker's app, using plain white paper. Then make sure print quality isn't set to Draft and the paper type matches what's loaded. If pages come out crooked or off-center, slide the tray's paper guides so they rest lightly against the stack.
Didn’t work? Go to the full stepsYou might see
- Text has fuzzy or doubled edges
- Straight vertical lines look jagged or broken into steps
- The print is crooked or shifted toward one edge
- Photos look soft or blocky
Usually caused by
- Print head not aligned, common after changing cartridges
- Draft quality or the wrong paper type selected
- Loose paper guides letting sheets feed at an angle
- Low-resolution images, or a paper size and scaling mismatch
- Ink smudges on the encoder strip of an inkjet
Safety first. Power off and unplug the printer before cleaning anything inside it, and don't touch the print head nozzles, copper contacts or a laser printer's drum.
Step-by-step fix
Work through the steps in order and check each one off. Most people are printing again before the last step.

-
Align the print head (inkjet)
Find the alignment option in the printer's maintenance, tools or setup menu, or in the maker's app. Load plain white paper and follow each prompt; many printers ask you to place the printed pattern on the scanner glass. It's worth doing after every cartridge change.
-
Set the paper guides
Slide the width guides until they just touch both sides of the stack without bending it, and move the length guide up to the paper's end. Sheets that feed at an angle print crooked.
-
Use dry, decent paper
Very cheap or damp paper lets ink spread into the fibers, making text fuzzy, and on lasers damp paper can scatter toner. Try paper from a freshly opened ream.
-
Check the image itself
If only certain files look soft, zoom in on screen: a small image stretched to fill a page prints blurry. Use the original, full-size photo rather than a copy saved from a message or web page.
-
Clean the encoder strip (inkjet, optional)
Many inkjets have a thin clear plastic strip behind the print head carriage that tells the printer where the head is. If it has ink smudges, unplug the printer and wipe it gently with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water, without pulling or bending it. Skip this if your manual says not to touch it.

-
Raise quality and set the paper type
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > your printer > Printing preferences (Windows 10: Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners > your printer > Manage). Choose Normal or Best quality and the paper type you've loaded.
-
Run alignment from your PC
Some drivers include alignment on a maintenance tab inside Printing preferences; otherwise it's in the maker's app. Load plain paper before you start.
-
Check paper size and scaling
In the app's print dialog, make sure the paper size matches the tray and scaling is actual size or fit to page. Letter selected with A4 loaded, or the other way round, shifts or crops content.
macOS

-
Raise quality and set the paper type
In the print dialog, open Media & Quality (or the maker's equivalent) and choose a higher quality and the correct paper type. Click Show Details first on older macOS versions if you only see a few options.
-
Check paper size and scale
Make sure Paper Size matches the paper in the tray and Scale is 100%, or use the scale-to-fit option under paper handling.
-
Run alignment
macOS has no alignment tool of its own for most printers. Use the printer's control panel, the maker's Mac app, or the Utility tab under Options & Supplies in Printers & Scanners if your driver provides one.
Did this fix it?
Good. To confirm everything is healthy, print a test page. It takes a minute and shows any quality problems early.

Common questions
Why did prints go blurry right after I changed cartridges?
A new cartridge can sit very slightly differently from the old one, so ink lands a fraction off target. Running alignment fixes this in most cases.
How often should I align the print head?
Only when you see fuzzy or doubled lines, or after changing cartridges or moving the printer. Many printers align automatically when a new cartridge is fitted.
